Though all Porsche automobiles come from a heritage based in racing, the 930 Turbo has an even stronger bloodline. In order to comply with racing rules for the desired groups, the vehicles had to be made in production runs and available to the consumer market. These vehicles which were wider and faster than the classic 911 immediately gained popularity and have been an icon ever since.

 

The power house included in the 930 Turbo is a 3.3 Liter flat 6 putting out roughly 330 horsepower. Sitting directly above the engine is one of the most easily identifiable features of the series, the "whale tale" rear wing. Early models may have "Turbo Carrera" on the rear deck lid, but after the mid 70's Porsche opted to only brand them as "Turbo". Aside from the large rear wing, they look like a typical 911 at first glance. Place them side by side and the differences become quickly apparent. The 930 is lower and the wheel wells are considerably wider, giving it a much curvier profile.

 

For a period from 1980 to 1985, the 930 was not available in the US due to emissions regulations, though some may have made their way into the states from Canada. They were reintroduced in 1986.
